Pandy in the Ceiriog Valley
Following up river from Glyn the B4500 takes
you to another small hamlet - Pandy. The name means fulling mill'.
Dating back to the fourteenth century it is thought to be the very first
mill designed to treat hand-woven cloth by raising the nap so firming
and enhancing the material ready for use. It brought people and business
to this small community. However, this would not have had the
environmental impact that the later quarrying ventures caused as the
centuries passed by. In 1888 when the tramway was extended to just
beyond Pandy the complex track system at Hendre meant great quantities
of dolerite could be moved each day. Dust settled over the whole area.
Working at Hendre continued until 1950 - long after the tramway had
closed. In 1975 the old fulling mill became a public house and shop. |
